For over 35 years it has been my great pleasure to know Bert. He brought joy, laughter and enormous knowledge to our encounters. That combination in one person is rare. No other like him is likely to pass our way.

Bert will be missed by so many people & organizations that were impacted by his incredible joy of life, energy and benevolence. We've been friends since sophomore year at Dartmouth and shared many adventures, "Friday lunches" and stories over the years. Our canoe trip down the Yukon back in '98 was the source of stories & laughter even in our last lunch together a month ago. Here's to you, "White Eyes"-- you will be missed and long remembered!

On behalf of all of us at Red River Theatres, which Bert supported generously over the years, we’ll miss his presence, encouragement, and huge grin.We know that RRT provided him with many great experiences and we were honored to have captured the attention of such a connoisseur of the arts and all of life’s best offerings. Bert never stopped learning, living well, or teaching others. He was charming, kind and a gentleman. We’ll miss him greatly.

Bert will be greatly missed. He was, I think, the youngest of his generation and I am the oldest of mine, only 10 years younger. He was a "fun cousin" as I was growing up.(Rides in Cricket, anyone?) I remember that during one of those many July 4 or Labor Day weekends, when we Miricks would be at the Homestead for the long weekend, he dispelled some boredom by whisking a bunch of us off to the movies - simply unheard-of during these family gatherings! I also remember his love of sailing. I must have been 15 or so when he took me to Marblehead to go out on his boat. It felt very glamorous to be out with my sophisticated cousin. And it always felt to me as though Bert was an important part of the glue that held the Whittemores together.

Bert and I enjoyed many conversations during our time as trustees of the NH Historical Society and as members of the society's various committees. He was always thoughtful and engaging. His participation was valued and his passing leaves a hole that will not easily be filled. My husband Bruce and I extend our deepest sympathies to all his family and friends and our gratitude for the privilege of knowing and working with him over the years.

Everyone loved Bert. He was such a wonderful man. I feel so lucky to have spent time with him over the past 6 years. He always made a wonderful list of "to do" options when I came to visit. All of the selections were wonderful and it was hard to pick just one. He cared deeply about his fellow man, his country and was dedicated to living an interesting, meaningful and fulfilled life. He loved his family, his state, his schools, his hometown, was fun to be with, loved to sing and play the piano, traveled far and wide, was aware and decent and beloved by everyone. Thank you Bert for being in my life and for sharing yours so warmly and generously with me and my family, and yes, Nugget will always be yours. We will always remember you with so much love, Great Eastern Bear. Erin Porter

Bert and his stories will be sorely missed. He was a wonderful neighbor and a smiling face we saw frequently as he picked up his mail and paper each day. We spoke of owning a Prius and how much fun it is to drive. May the family know how sorry we are to hear of Bert's passing. God be with the family at this time.
