CENTER BARNSTEAD – Vernon Christopher Hipkiss, 79, of Center Barnstead, passed away on Friday May 14, 2021 at Concord Hospital with his son by his side.
Born on April 10, 1942 in Oakland California, he was the son of the late Vernon Willetts Hipkiss and Sylvia Emilie (Christophersen) Hipkiss.
All his friends and family knew him as Chris.
Chris graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1960 and attended University of California, Davis from 1960 – 1962. He then enrolled in the US Coast Guard Academy and graduated with a BS degree in 1966. In 1973 he graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA with a MS in Electrical Engineering.
After being honorably discharged from the USCG and moving to Barnstead NH with his wife and son, he worked in the public water industry and finished his career as a Lab Supervisor for the Franklin Water Treatment Facility. During those years he also chaired the Barnstead Town Budget Committee, and after retirement served as the town Moderator. Chris was an Eagle Scout and was the Scout Master of Barnstead Troop 43 for over 20 years. He loved to hike and completed all the 4,000 footers in New Hampshire.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Susan L. (Ladd) Hipkiss in March 2021.
He is survived by his son Seneca and his wife Jenapher of Exeter NH, grandchildren, Rory and Willa, siblings Victor and Karl Hipkiss of Sonoma CA as well as several nieces and nephews.
At Vernon’s request there will not be any public services. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. The Still Oaks Funeral & Memorial Home in Epsom is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to BSA Troop 43, 64 Shaw Rd. Barnstead, NH 03218.
