Richard (Rick) Malcolm Whitman of Concord, NH passed away on August 26th, 2020 at the age of 72, after a long illness.
He was born in Stanford, CT on May 12th, 1948 to the late Richard Whitman and Alice (Hook) Whitman.
He spent much of his childhood in Bradford, going on to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era. He had many varied jobs throughout his life spending most of his time as an Art Coordinator for a local publishing company.
Rick had a traveler’s heart and was happiest when he was on a road trip with good music playing. He spent much of his early adulthood on the road, following his favorite band, the Grateful Dead, and making plenty of friends along the way. Rick enjoyed spending time in nature, tending to his plants, doing puzzles, and watching comedy movies. He liked to cook new recipes and try the spiciest foods he could get his hands on. He loved surrealist art, particularly Salvador Dalí, and spent much of his free time drawing as well. Regardless of where in the world he was or who he was with, Rick always had a laugh to share and a story to tell. Even at the end of his life, he kept doctors and nurses laughing in his hospital stays and his nursing home.
Rick was predeceased by both his parents as well as his stepbrother, Michael.
He is survived by his son, Travis J. Whitman of Bradford and daughter, Brigid Emma Whitman of Dover, as well as her fiancé Richard Murphy. He is also succeeded by his sisters, Gail Whitman, Joan Johnson, Whit Whitman, and Sarah Whitman O’Day, as well as his stepsister Kimberly Whitman and stepmother Barbara Yates Flewelling.
Due to the current pandemic and several of Rick’s loved ones living several states away, a celebration of life will not be held until spring. Rick’s daughter will be in touch with family closer to that time with more details. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Lung Association, or planting a tree in his honor.
