CONCORD- Mr. Frederick G. “Gamp” Hamel, 84, of Concord, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family and friends while in the care of the Granite VNA Hospice House on January 17, 2023.
Born in Weare, Fred was the son of the late Alvin and Olive (Peasley) Hamel. He was raised in Weare. He enlisted in the Army National Guard and proudly served until his honorable discharge with the rank of Specialist 4 in 1959.
Prior to his retirement, he worked for many years as a paver. Being a man of many hats, he did many jobs throughout the years such as construction and masonry work. He later worked in the Maintenance Dept. for Concord Hospital for 27 years.
In his world, known as everyone’s “Gamp”, he loved his animals with all he had. His 66 mustang was his pride and joy. Fred also enjoyed a good NASCAR race. He loved being outside puttering on everyday projects. He was extremely proud of his family and loved spending time together.
He was predeceased by his siblings: Alvin Hamel, Jr., Evelyn Saegart and Walter Hamel.
Fred is survived by his wife of 53 1/2 years, Betty J. (Keniston) Hamel; his two children, Melissa Jane Hamel of Buffalo, NY and Mark James Hamel of Spartanburg, SC; his grandchildren, McKayla, Megan, Scott, Tom and Alex; his great grandchildren, Landon, Mason, Jaylen and Haven and one on the way; his siblings, Nancy Kolsky of Hooksett, Olive Pelletier of Francestown, Raymond Hamel of VT and Vernon Hamel of Hillsboro; as well as many nieces and nephews and a local dance community that will miss him severely.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 27th from 4 to 6 P.M. in The Roan Family Funeral Home, 167 Main St. in Pembroke. A Memorial Service will follow at 6 P.M.
