Carol Ann Laffey Whitman Obituary

Carol Ann Laffey Whitman passed away unexpectedly in her Concord home on September 21st, 2021. She was a beloved mother, sister, and friend. She was born on April 13th, 1961 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Vincent and Doris Laffey. She grew up with a love for the ocean, cats, antiques, and her younger sister. As a child, she lived in New York and Florida, but always preferred Rhode Island and considered it home even after living in New Hampshire for thirty years. She graduated from Rhode Island College in 1983 with her Bachelor’s in Communications. She worked in various jobs over the following decades, but by far her favorite was working as an antique dealer, combining her love of history and beautiful things.

Carol loved gardening, cooking, and baking, especially at Christmastime. She loved cats, who always seemed to sense a friend in her kind spirit. She adored Victorian clothing and collected beautiful vintage pieces of lace. Best of all she loved to read, particularly historical biographies, and lovingly referred to her large collection of books as her dear friends. In the second half of her life, she was diagnosed with several chronic illnesses. Despite the pain these caused her, there were pieces of her which never changed. Her wit remained sharp, her intellect unmatched, and her strength unbroken.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Doris Laffey. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Brigid Emma Murphy, and son-in-law, Rick Murphy, both of Dover. She is also survived by her loving sister, Dianna Laffey of Lutz, FL, nephew Jason Laffey of Holiday, FL niece Erika Ellis, and nephew-in-law Phil Ellis, both of Lutz, FL. Services will be held in Carol’s true home of Rhode Island in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests anyone wishing to do so make a donation to the National CFIDS Foundation in her name.
